HUMAN AND ANIMAL
PROGRAMMES OF INTERACTION

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a goal directed intervention in which an animal meeting specific criteria is an integral part of the treatment process. Animal-assisted therapy is delivered and/or directed by health or human service providers working within the scope of their profession. Animal-assisted therapy is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. Animal-assisted therapy is provided in a variety of settings, and may be group or individual in nature. The process is documented and evaluated.

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

Fiona is a fully qualified and GTCS-registered teacher with extensive experience across nursery, primary, additional support needs, and complex needs settings. She is a certified Animal-Assisted Play Practitioner and a Trainee CBT Therapist, allowing her to draw on a blended skill set that combines educational expertise, therapeutic approaches, and evidence-based animal-assisted practice.

She also holds a Master’s degree in Human–Animal Interaction (psychology), which underpins her integrated approach to supporting children and young people.

Darcy is a six-year-old working Cocker Spaniel who has been supporting Fiona in schools for two years. Darcy is clever, intuitive, and loves engaging with children and young people. Her favourite activity is “Dog Bingo,” and she also enjoys a good “Walk & Talk.” She often has plenty to say along the way!

We are also excited to introduce Buzz, our incredibly handsome Labrador mix. He is currently undergoing assessment for his suitability to work in schools.

The vast majority of children involved benefitted from the programme very much and have built self-confidence and an awareness of the needs and feelings of others through it. Fiona is very adaptable and accommodating to the children with challenging behaviours that were involved. It is a fantastic opportunity for children to be part of.
